Course directed by Laurence Perkins
10 wind players (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns) of intermediate level (ABRSM grades 6-8)
Peter Warlock (arr. John Gaddes): Capriol Suite
Carl Orff (arr Friedrich Wanek): Carmina Burana – five movements
Beethoven (arr. Laurence Perkins): Battle Symphony [see note below]
(a) Bartok (arr Mark Popkin): Rumanian Dances
(b) Gustav Holst: Wind Quintet
Players will be allocated one of the two wind quintets listed here.
Here is a wonderful chance for intermediate-level wind players (ABRSM grades 6-8) to explore some fine substantial music in depth, with one of Britain’s leading wind players. Daily rehearsals through the week will lead to two performances, in the Great Hall on Friday evening and as a more informal ‘foyer’ concert on Saturday evening. After the main Saturday evening concert, there is the ever-popular MusicFest party with lots of musical contributions, which will include the legendary fight between the English and the French in the form of Beethoven’s ‘Battle’ Symphony, complete with ‘virtual cannons’ (bass drums) and two musical armies – huge fun for everyone!
