Tim Boulton

An intensive week of viola study with tutor Tim Boulton. The course will include daily warm-up/technique time for all, individual and small group lessons, daily performance class with accompanist for everyone. There will also be plenty of time for individual practice and performance opportunities in various showcase concerts.

Tim Boulton, a natural musical communicator inspired equally by performing, conducting and teaching, has been central to many innovations and developments in music education in Cornwall over the last 15 years.  Back in the 1980s Tim learnt the most important lessons about musical language from Sandor Végh and other senior musicians at the International Musicians Seminars at Prussia Cove, Cornwall:  Drawn to the region by the beauty of the sea and granite cliffs, he and his family have been living in West Cornwall since 2003.

His company MusicAbility runs youth orchestras and education courses as well as promoting music in many different ways in education and health.  Tim is director of Cornwall Youth Orchestra, works in close partnership with Cornwall Music Education Hub and South West Music School and devises and runs outreach projects for IMS Prussia Cove. He also runs the Music For Youth Regional Festivals for Devon & Cornwall and the series of Concerts Penzance.  He teaches many violin and viola students in Cornwall.

Until 2003 Tim was based in London, performing with a number of highly respected chamber groups and chamber orchestras, including the Vellinger String Quartet, Raphael Ensemble and the award winning piano quartet Domus.  Orchestral experience includes extensive work with the English Chamber Orchestra, Academy of St. Martin-in-the-fields and Chamber Orchestra of Europe, as well as a number of period instrument orchestras.  He was a Professor at Guildhall School of Music & Drama from 1988-2005 teaching viola and chamber music.
