Graham Oppenheimer will run a vibrant viola class aimed at opportunities for: an individual lesson every day (schedule permitting); developing repertoire (please bring 2 extensive works and confirm them in advance); making the most of your own practice through plans and targeted work; sessions listening to recordings of different areas of repertoire and different performing styles; viola Ensemble working together on works from Bach Brandenburg Concerto no 6 to Beatles arrangements for 5 violas (!); regular sessions with an in-class pianist; playing in chamber groups with other students; end of course performances.

About your course leader

Graham Oppenheimer is one of the UK’s foremost and most respected violists. He studied with Atar Arad at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and Eastman School of Music, USA, and with Alberto Lysy at the International Menuhin Music Academy, Gastad. Joining the English Chamber Orchestra while still a student, he was later a founder member and Principal Viola of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, under Claudio Abbado. Oppenheimer has appeared as guest violist with leading quartets, including Vermeer, Lindsay, Pacifica, Vogler, Vanbrugh, Carducci, St Lawrence, Australian and Petersen, and with piano trios including the Cropper/Welsh/Roscoe, Busch and Hochelaga. He has appeared in chamber music collaborations with Yehudi Menuhin, Paul Tortellier, Murray Perahia. Imogen Cooper, Lars Anders Tomter, Martin Roscoe and James Galway, and was a founder member of the Schidlof Quartet who appreared worldwide, recording several CD’s for Linn Records. Oppenheimer is Senior Chamber Music Tutor at Chetham’s School of Music and gives masterclasses internationally. He has also broadcast on radio throughout the world, from the BBC in the UK to the ABC in Australia.

Fees and your stay

The tuition fee for this course is £595 excluding accommodation, which includes a pass to all concerts during Musicfest. Early bird discounts are available on all courses booked and paid for in full before 30th April.

Self-catering and en-suite accommodation is offered at a discounted rate for Musicfest students in University halls of residence, or you can book your own accommodation outside the University. See the accommodation page for further details.

Financial Support

Musicfest Aberystwyth welcomes bursary students from all over the world and prides itself on offering high-quality, intensive training for music students, graduates, and music professionals. We do not wish finance to be a barrier to attending our Summer School so our bursaries (funds towards the cost of fees) are available to help students, graduates and young musicians attend our courses. Friends of MusicFest provide bursaries towards MusicFest Aberystwyth course fees for students in full-time education.
