We are excited to launch our 2022 international festival and summer school with our most ambitious event to date. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, one of the great London orchestras, not heard in Aberystwyth for fifty years, opens the festival with a concert of classical masterpieces, under the baton of rising-star conductor Alpesh Chauhan. In May 2022 it was announced that Alpesh had been awarded the Italian Music Critics’ prize for the Best Conductor of the Year. Still in his 30s, he is wowing musicians all over the world already, and we are very excited to welcome him to Aberystwyth.

RPO’s mission is to enrich lives through orchestral experiences that are uncompromising in their excellence and inclusive in their appeal, and we are thrilled to be featuring two titan works of the classical music world at Aberystwyth Arts Centre. We will be joined by one of the most exciting British cellists of his generation and a Musicfest favourite, Guy Johnston, for Elgar’s brooding masterpiece, his Cello Concerto, followed by Brahms’ 4th Symphony. This symphony might be a reliable and familiar staple on concert programmes but listen to it with fresh ears, as it contains some of the most moving, darkest, and deepest music of the 19th-century.

Please note the earlier start for this concert.

Event programme

Felix Mendelssohn: Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Edward Elgar: Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85
Johannes Brahms: Symphony No. 4 in E minor, Op. 98
