One World: Music and Film

3pm-7pm 27th July 2024, The Round Studio, Aberystwyth Arts Centre

One World: Music and Film is a collection of films made by artists and organizations associated with this year’s MUSICFEST: One World. The films use music and film to explore the climate crisis and the human relationship with our world, but each takes a very different approach. The films are between 3 minutes and 33 minutes long and will be shown on a rolling loop from 3pm to 7pm, ahead of the evening performance by Sinfonia Cymru – Regenerate: Seasons for Change (8pm). No need to arrive at a particular time, or to book tickets. Just turn up and take time to reflect at your own pace.

AMAZON

A trip to the Amazon takes an unexpected turn. Created during the first lockdown of the Covid 19 Pandemic in 2020, AMAZON combines music, text and visuals in a poetic reflection on our world.

Created by Composer Alex Ho and Theatre Maker Elayce Ismail and co-commissioned in 2020 by Music Theatre Wales and London Sinfonietta, in partnership with HOME (Manchester).

interbeing

interbeing is an experimental operatic collage exploring humanity’s relationship with land and the environmental impact of our actions. It uses the physical connection between land and body as a motif, serving as a call to action and delivering a powerful emotional message through poetry, music, image, and sung text.

Created by composer/performer Simmy Singh with visuals/libretto by ASHA and vocals sung by Anna Dennis. Commissioned in 2024 by Music Theatre Wales.

Towards Silence

Towards Silence is a string quartet commissioned from John Metcalf by Carol Nixon, to present the tragedy of the extinction of species. The unravelling of the web of life is portrayed through the music – a figure walks through nature, first joyous and abundant, later depleted and sad.

Music by John Metcalf, performed by the Solem Quartet. Commissioned in 2022 by Carol Nixon.

My version of Land Art makes use of the world I find around to create temporary structures and patterns which, over time are intended to return to the environment that they are made of. To the best of my knowledge no plants we harmed in the making of these pieces, all the materials used I find discarded on the ground and ‘given’ by the plants.

The music in each film is also my own composition and performance.
