Performing Welsh Trad with Patrick Rimes

Performing Welsh Trad with Patrick Rimes

Friday 23rd July 2021 - Saturday 24th July 2021
2:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Overview

For the first time at MusicFest Aberystwyth, we are thrilled to bring you a two-day short course in Welsh roots and trad performance with acclaimed fiddle and pipes players, Patrick Rimes. This specially-designed course is open to anyone who has an interest in performing traditional music, and participants will have the opportunity to learn about performing by ear, the art of folk music in Wales, and collaborative performance techniques. Led by Patrick, the participants will also have an opportunity to perform and produce a new track that will be released and premiered as part of MusicFest’s 2021 digital content. This is one not to miss!

About our course leader

As a fiddle and pipes player, composer, and conductor, Patrick Rimes continues to strive to bend and ultimately break the perceived ‘boundaries’ between roots music and other genres. As a member of ground breaking folk five-piece Calan, he has recorded three studio albums and placed Welsh music on the map at many of England’s most prestigious festivals including Cambridge, Sidmouth and Cropredy, as well as touring regularly in Europe and the USA. His fruitful collaboration with the Cerys Matthews band has seen him take their unique blend of Welsh and American influenced music to the platform of the World Music Expo, the Nuyorican poets cafe in New York and the BBC Proms. 2014 saw the release of his first work as a musical director for television – a successful collaboration with Bryn Terfel and a selection of guest artists for S4C’s ‘Nadolig Bryn Terfel’. This was followed by ‘Bryn Terfel – Gwlad y Gân’ (Bryn Terfel – Land of Song) for S4C in 2016.

Financial Support

Musicfest Aberystwyth welcomes bursary students from all over the world and prides itself on offering high-quality, intensive training for music students, graduates, and music professionals. We do not wish finance to be a barrier to attending our Summer School so our bursaries (funds towards the cost of fees) are available to help students, graduates and young musicians attend our courses. Friends of MusicFest provide bursaries towards MusicFest Aberystwyth course fees for students in full-time education. The number of bursaries available is limited, so it is essential you apply as soon as possible.  For more information and how to apply, please visit our Fees and Bursaries page.
