Describing the piano and violin of his Sonata as “essentially incompatible instruments, which not only do not sink their differences, but accentuate incompatibility to an even greater degree”, it is hard to believe that Ravel’s Violin Sonata No. 2 now stands as one the most hypnotically riveting of the repertoire. We welcome back a familiar face at MusicFest and an international rising-star, violinist Thomas Mathias, to perform a recital showcasing this dynamic duo in works by Ravel, Kreisler, Ysaye, and a UK Premiere of Ysaye Shuffle by American violinist and composer, Tessa Lark.
