Conducting with Toby Purser

Saturday 23rd July 2022 - Saturday 30th July 2022
9:00 am - 5:30 pm

Reserve Space(s)

The conductors’ course, directed by Toby Purser, is designed for conductors who already have advanced conducting experience and wish to explore both operatic and symphonic repertoire. All lessons take place as a small group, with emphasis on working in a mutually supportive and interactive atmosphere. The class works together for six hour per day both with pianists and with members of Sinfonia 1, and conducting a showcase event.

The week focusses on both symphonic and operatic conducting skills, and also includes regular collaboration with the composers’ course. Classes will cover aspects of technique and philosophy, musicianship and score preparation, aural awareness, and rehearsal skills.

Classes begin on the Sunday with pianos, and from Wednesday with orchestra. Participating students are expected to have a thorough knowledge of all the scores as they may also be entrusted with rehearsing the orchestra for its performances (conducted by Toby). Students are encouraged to bring their own video cameras or phone tripods.

Course repertoire

Compulsory: Mozart Symphony No.40 (1st version); Schubert Symphony No.5; Schoenberg Verklärte Nacht (string orchestra version); Verdi Act 3 of Rigoletto

Optional and/or for observation: Mozart Concerto for Flute and Harp; Mozart Clarinet Concerto; Mozart Wind serenade in E-flat, K.375; Mozart Parto, Parto, from La Clemenza di Tito

Musicfest Aberystwyth welcomes bursary students from all over the world and prides itself on offering high-quality, intensive training for music students, graduates, and music professionals.
