Designed and directed by clarinettists David Campbell and Anthony Friend, with pianist Edward Leung, this course for clarinettists will be limited to eight participants, who should be over the age of 16 on July 1st 2022. They should have a minimum standard of ABRSM Grade 7 and are requested to bring both a Bb and A clarinet as well as a music stand with them. From Sunday through to Friday the sessions will run from 9.30 to 12.00 and 3.30 to 5.30 in Penglais School, a short walk from the accommodation and the Arts Centre. Over the lunch break participants will have the opportunity to attend a lunchtime concert in the Great Hall, as well as a masterclass featuring a different discipline each day. At 6.30, 7.15 and 8.00 there will be further performances to which all Summer School attendees have free access.

All clarinet students should prepare two works from the standard repertoire for clarinet and piano as well as two movements from the works by Mozart, Brahms, Weber or Bliss for clarinet quintet (clarinet and string quartet). As well as daily sessions with Edward Leung, our resident collaborative pianist, there will be two sessions with the Solem Quartet and one with the Sacconi Quartet in which course members will be able to play quintet works with these fine professional ensembles. Repertoire choices should be submitted to Joan Rowlands, our Administrator, by July 1st. There will also be workshop sessions on topics such as How to Practice, Coping with Nerves, Aspects of Technique and Intonation. On the final Saturday all participants with have the chance to perform in a Showcase Concert. Most students, guest artists and tutors return home on the Sunday morning (31st July).

Financial Support

Musicfest Aberystwyth welcomes bursary students from all over the world and prides itself on offering high-quality, intensive training for music students, graduates, and music professionals. We do not wish finance to be a barrier to attending our Summer School so our bursaries (funds towards the cost of fees) are available to help students, graduates and young musicians attend our courses. Friends of MusicFest provide bursaries towards MusicFest Aberystwyth course fees for students in full-time education. The number of bursaries available is limited, so it is essential you apply as soon as possible.  For more information and how to apply, please visit our Fees and Bursaries page.
