Musicfest Aberystwyth Advanced Composition Course, for composers of postgraduate or early professional level, co-directed by Arlene Sierra (Cardiff University) and Kenneth Hesketh (Royal College of Music).
The course will consist of regular sessions alternating with workshops with detailed feedback from resident and visiting composers and performers. Students will work on new compositions for two ensembles, Sinfonia 1 and Mad Song, which will be workshopped and recorded as part of the Musicfest Aberystwyth main programme.
Students from the Composition Course will be assigned a conductor from the Conducting Course who will help prepare their work.
· Presentation/discussion of participants’ music
· Workshops and talks with Musicfest guest soloists and artist faculty
· Seminar on collaboration between Composers and Conductors
· Workshop-recording sessions with ensembles Sinfonia 1 (16 players) and Mad Song (6 players) over the Musicfest week.
· Collaboration with an assigned student conductor
Students will have access to pianos, keyboards, computers, printing facilities and audio equipment. Details about specific project instrumentations will be provided at the time of acceptance into the programme.
For less experienced composers, enrolling as an observer is recommended, allowing active participation in classes and discussions, and the opportunity to learn from observing all classes and rehearsals.
Application deadline is February 28th. Early application is advised as places are limited to ten students, selected by CV and portfolio comprised of two scores, with two audio recordings of recent works – at least one recording and score should be of the same material.
The tuition fee for this course is £650 (Observers: £200) which includes a free pass to all Musicfest concerts, recitals, masterclasses and talks during the 8 day course. Early bird discounts are available on all courses booked and paid for in full before 29th February.
The Friends of Musicfest award a limited number of bursaries towards tuition fees, so early application is advisable. Bursaries of £260 are available for all students in full-time education in the UK and bursaries and £180 for international students. See the fees and bursaries page for further details.
Self-catering and en-suite accommodation is offered at a discounted rate for Musicfest students in University halls of residence, or you can book your own accommodation outside the University. See the accommodation page for further details.
