Musicfest Aberystwyth Advanced Composition Course, for composers of postgraduate or early professional level, directed by Arlene Sierra (Cardiff University), with visiting professor Kenneth Hesketh (Royal College of Music)

The course will consist of regular sessions alternating with workshops with detailed feedback from resident and visiting composers and performers. Students will work on new compositions for two visiting chamber groups, Trio Aquilae and Eight Kings, which will be workshopped and recorded as part of the Musicfest Aberystwyth main programme. An orchestral reading session will be available for short original works with the Orion Orchestra, where students from the Composition Course will be assigned a conductor from the Conducting Course who will help prepare their work.

Course activities

      • Presentation/discussion of participants’ music
      • Workshops and talks with Musicfest guest soloists and artist faculty
      • Seminar on collaboration between Composers and Conductors
      • Workshop-recording sessions with chamber groups Trio Aquilae (flute, viola, harp) and Eight Kings (flute, clarinet, percussion, piano, violin, cello) over the Musicfest week.
      • Orchestral reading session of a short work given by the Orion Orchestra and an assigned student conductor

Students will have access to pianos, keyboards, computers, printing facilities and audio equipment.

Details about specific project instrumentations will be provided at the time of acceptance into the programme.

For less experienced composers, enrolling as an observer is recommended, allowing active participation in classes and discussions, and the opportunity to learn from observing all classes and rehearsals.

Application deadline is April 30th. Early application is advised as places are limited to ten students, selected by CV and portfolio comprised of two scores, with two audio recordings of recent works – at least one recording and score should be of the same material.

The cost of the course is £650 (Observers : £120) which includes a free pass to all concerts, recitals, masterclasses and talks during Musicfest during the 8 day course.

Bursaries of £260 are available for all students in full-time education in UK. (bursaries of international students are also available) There is limited availability to these bursaries so we would advise early booking.

Cost of accommodation is an additional £280 for standard rooms of £320 for ensuite accommodation for 8 days. All accommodation is in student halls. A link will be issued to the university conference office when open.
