On Saturday 11th March two internationally renowned musicians Tom Poster and Elena Urioste will be performing in Aberystwyth at a free concert hosted by Friends of MusicFest. The concert will take place in the Old Hall, Old College at 7.30PM.
Tom Poster is a well-known favourite of local audiences and has been performing at MusicFest for many years – he is an internationally celebrated pianist with a passion for creative programming. He will be joined by Elena Urioste who will be performing for Aberystwyth audiences for the very first time. Elena Urioste was recently selected as a BBC New Generation artist; she has given acclaimed performances with major orchestras throughout the United States and throughout Europe including the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Hallé Orchestra.
The musicians are generously donating their time free of charge as part of the efforts of Friends of MusicFest raising funds for student bursaries to support young musicians to attend the MusicFest International Summer School. A number of local businesses will be supporting the event including The Mecca (specialist coffee and tea store), Jewellery House, Columbine Florists, and Ystwyth Books.
Peter Kingswood from Friends of MusicFest said “MusicFest offers an amazing opportunity for students to benefit from the festival. To help with the tuition fees a charity was registered in the name of ‘Friends of MusicFest, Aberystwyth’ in 2007. This raises money for bursaries from various trusts and foundations with the help of many generous individuals whose donations are especially important to MusicFest. These funds assist students, which includes many local youngsters, who would otherwise be unable to attend the event which is so advantageous to their musical knowledge and in many cases their future careers. As MusicFest grows year by year Aberystwyth is increasingly put on the musical map in Wales and beyond and Aberystwyth is privileged to have such an event locally.”
Carol Nixon from Friends of MusicFest said, “We are just thrilled that Tom Poster has agreed, yet again, to support our fundraising efforts. Tom is known to classical music enthusiasts in Aber already, the pianist with the velvet touch and the hammer-like dramatic forte’s. Now he is joined by American violinist Elena Urioste, whose silver tone and virtuoso skill have made her in high demand as a soloist across America and Europe. Together they create a musical world which many listeners will not have heard before. The programme includes two longer pieces by Grieg, and a large number of shorter pieces for sheer fun, including Gershwin. It will be a delightfully varied programme and offers an incredible opportunity to see two incredible musicians performing for FREE. “
