Lars Lien is senior lecturer in saxophone at the Artic University of Norway, Tromsø. He has performed as a soloist and chamber musician all over Norway, Europe and the USA. Educated at the Norwegian State Academy of Music, Lien has more than 25 years’ experience as a professional musician. His main focus has been contemporary music and he has more than 100 dedications from composers. Lien has explored several modern techniques including improvisation and live electronics.
Lars Lien is a regular member of Saxofon Concentus, NoXaS, Affinis Ensemble, and the Oslo Sinfonietta. He has worked with the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, BiT-20 Ensemble and Asamisimasa.
In 2016 he received the faculty prize for teaching excellence at the Music Conservatoire in Tromsø. The recording “Pretty Sound” with Asamisimasa was awarded the Spellemann prize (the Norwegian equivalent of a Grammy Award) for best contemporary music album of the year.
In 2016 he released a solo recording of groundbreaking contemporary music for saxophone and voice, “Phonetix”, on the LAWO label.
