Time Travel. Foto: Marius Fiskum / www.mariusfiskum.noBernhard Henrik Crusell (1775–1838), born in a Swedish-speaking part of Finland was a clarinet virtuoso and a composer of some standing. His first clarinet quartet was written around 1802 and shows him to have been very strongly influenced by Mozart and, indeed, has all the charm of the Kegelstadt Trio.

Simone Fontanelli is an Italian composer and conductor who teaches at the Salzburg Mozarteum University.  Il Vario inganno della Fortuna (‘The varied deceit of Fortune’) is a work for unaccompanied cello, dedicated to Nick Jones who gave its première at the Sienna Festival in 2008 and played it at Musicfest in 2010.

Bjørn Howard Kruse was born in London in 1946 but grew up in the USA and Norway.  He studied the clarinet and composition at UCLA, California and the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. He taught at the academy from 1976, becoming professor of composition in 1997. He retired from the Academy in 2013, becoming Professor Emeritus. He has written chamber music, choral music and larger scale works and is also well known for his paintings.

Anton Arensky’s second string quartet was written shortly after Tchaikovsky’s death and is dedicated to his memory. The second movement is a set of variations on a song by Tchaikovsky and is often heard on its own in the composer’s arrangement for string orchestra. The quartet is unusual in its instrumentation and the replacement of the second violin by a second cello gives an unusual deep sonority particularly apparent in the moving first movement.

Sigyn Fossnesaberystwyth-musicfest-117 studied the violin at the Norwegian State Academy and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She now teaches at the Barratt Due Institute of Music in Norway and is setting up a programme for violin professors in Hanoi. She was formerly a violinist in Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, but in recent years she has performed with her own Ensemble Ernst.  She has given the first performances of many new Norwegian works.

Graham Oppenheimer is one of the UK’s foremost and respected violists. His first professional position was as a member of the English Chamber Orchestra and he went on to become a founder member and principal viola of the Chamber Orchestra of Europe under Claudio Abbado. He has appeared in chamber music with such artists as Yehudi Menuhin, Paul Tortellier, James Galway, Murray Perahia and Jack Brymer, and was also violist and founder of the Schidlof Quartet. His recordings can be heard on the RCA and Linn labels.

Kari Ravnan was born and brought up in the USA and studied at the Eastman School of Music before moving to Europe. She has given solo recitals and played in chamber ensembles across Europe and the United States; she has appeared as a concerto soloist with a number of well-known orchestras and has performed as principal cellist with several orchestras including the Bergen Philharmonic.

Lars Lien pursued his musical education at the Norwegian Academy of Music from 1986 to 1992. Ever since his student years he has devoted special attention to the creative processes generated by the symbiosis between composer and performer. Through this work he has sculpted an entirely new Norwegian performance tradition for the saxophone that has influenced and inspired new performers right up to this day. Lars has performed as chamber musician and soloist in Norway, Europe and the USA, and he has contributed to many recordings.

Joseph ShinerJoseph Shiner graduated from Cambridge University with first class honours in Music before spending a year at the Royal Academy of Music. Since then he has built a promising career as a clarinettist winning many honours and prizes.

‘Roedd Bernhard Henrik Crusell (1775–1838), a anwyd mewn rhan o’r Ffindir lle y siaradwyd Swedeg, yn feistr ar y clarinet ac yn gyfansoddwr uchel ei barch. Ysgrifennodd ei bedwarawd clarinet cyntaf tua 1802 ac mae’n dangos iddo gael ei ddylanwadu’n gryf gan Mozart ac, yn wir, mae ganddo holl gyfaredd y triawd Kegelstadt.

Graham OppenheimerCyfansoddwr ac arweinydd Eidalaidd yw Simone Fontanelli sy’n dysgu ym Mhrifysgol Mozarteum Salzburg.  Mae Il Vario inganno della Fortuna (‘The varied deceit of Fortune’) yn ddarn ar gyfer sielo digyfeiliant, yn gyflwynedig i Nick Jones a chwaraeodd y darn am y tro cyntaf yng Ngŵyl Siena yn 2008 ac eto yn ystod Musicfest yn 2010.

Ganwyd Bjørn Howard Kruse yn Llundain ym 1946 ond cafodd ei fagu yn UDA a Norwy.  Astudiodd y clarinet a chyfansoddiad yn UCLA, California a’r Academi Gerdd Norwyaidd yn Oslo. Dysgodd yn yr academi o 1976, a daeth yn broffesor cyfansoddiad ym 1997. Ymddeolodd o’r Academi yn 2013, gan ddod yn Broffesor Emeritus. Mae wedi ysgrifennu cerddoriaeth siambr, cerddoriaeth gorawl a gweithiau ar raddfa fwy ac mae ef hefyd yn adnabyddus am ei baentiadau.

Ysgrifennwyd ail bedwarawd llinynnol Anton Arensky yn fuan ar ôl marwolaeth Tchaikovsky ac mae’n gyflwynedig er cof amdano. Mae’r ail symudiad yn gyfres o amrywiadau ar gân gan  Tchaikovsky ac fe’i clywir yn aml ar ei ben ei hun yn nhrefniant y cyfansoddwr ar gyfer cerddorfa linynnol. Mae’r pedwarawd yn anghyffredin yn ei offeryniaeth ac mae gosod ail sielo yn lle ail feiolin yn rhoi soniarusrwydd dwfn anghyffredin sy’n arbennig o amlwg yn y symudiad teimladwy cyntaf.

Astudiodd Sigyn Fossnes y feiolin yn yr Academi Norwyaidd Genedlaethol ac yn Ysgol Gerdd a Drama Guildhall. Mae hi ‘nawr yn dysgu yn Institiwt Cerdd Barratt Due yn Norwy ac mae’n sefydlu rhaglen ar gyfer proffeswyr ar y feiolin yn Hanoi. ‘Roedd hi’n feiolinydd gynt gyda Cherddorfa Symffoni Stavanger, ond yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf mae wedi perfformio gyda’i Ensemble Ernst ei hun.  Mae hi wedi cyflwyno perfformiadau cyntaf llawer o weithiau Norwyaidd newydd.

Graham Oppenheimer yw un o feiolinyddion mwyaf blaenllaw ac uchaf ei barch y DU. Ei rôl broffesiynol gyntaf oedd fel aelod o Gerddorfa Siambr Lloegr ac aeth ymlaen i fod yn aelod sefydlu a phrif fiola Cerddorfa Siambr Ewrop o dan Claudio Abbado. Mae ef wedi ymddangos mewn cerddoriaeth siambr efo artistiaid megis Yehudi Menuhin, Paul Tortellier, James Galway, Murray Perahia a Jack Brymer, ac ‘roedd hefyd yn feiolinydd a sefydlydd Pedwarawd Schidlof. Gellir clywed ei recordiadau ar y labeli RCA a Linn.

Cafodd Kari Ravnan ei geni a’i magu yn UDA ac astudiodd yn Ysgol Gerdd Eastman cyn symud i Ewrop. Mae hi wedi rhoi datganiadau solo ac wedi chwarae mewn ensembles siambr ledled Ewrop a’r Unol Daleithiau; mae wedi ymddangos fel unawdydd concerto gyda nifer o gerddorfeydd adnabyddus ac wedi perfformio fel prif sielydd gyda nifer o gerddorfeydd gan gynnwys Philharmonig Bergen.

Derbyniodd Lars Lien ei addysg gerddorol yn yr Academi Gerdd Norwyaidd o 1986 i 1992. Ers ei flynyddoedd fel myfyriwr mae wedi ymroddi’n arbennig at y prosesau creadigol a ddaw yn sgil y symbiosis rhwng cyfansoddwr a pherfformiwr. Trwy ei waith mae ef wedi cerfio traddodiad perfformio Norwyaidd newydd sbon ar gyfer y sacsoffon sydd wedi ysbrydoli a dylanwadu ar berfformwyr newydd hyd at y dydd presennol. Mae Lars wedi perfformio fel cerddor siambr ac unawdydd yn Norwy, Ewrop ac UDA, ac mae wedi cyfrannu at lawer o recordiadau.

Graddiodd Joseph Shiner o Brifysgol Caergrawnt gydag anrhydedd dosbarth cyntaf mewn Cerddoriaeth cyn treulio blwyddyn yn yr Academi Gerdd Frenhinol.  Ers hynny mae wedi datblygu gyrfa addawol fel clarinetydd gan ennill llawer o anrhydeddau a gwobrau.
