Tutor : Simone Rebello

A course designed for percussion students (from approximately grade 6 upwards) covering a wide range of topics and genres ranging from snare drum and stick technique skills, orchestral repertoire, 2 and 4 mallet studies on xylophone/vibraphone and marimba and some aspects of world music percussion including Brazilian Samba and Cuban playing styles.

The course will include a public masterclass following and a recital by Simone Rebello giving the students the opportunity to work with Simone on pre – prepared pieces.

The main focus of the course is the closing percussion recital where a programme of percussion ensemble repertoire will be performed by the students under director Simone Rebello. Many different styles of percussion repertoire will be showcased during this concert which will include Taiko drumming inspired music, contemporary percussion chamber music and music that uses ‘found sounds’ created by the students on the course.

Simone graduated with distinction from the Royal Northern College of Music in 1991 to embark on a career as a solo percussionist that has seen her recording several CDs, touring and broadcasting extensively internationally and winning a collection of awards and prizes. She is a solo artist for Yamaha, Sabian and Mike Balter Mallets. She works frequently as a concerto soloist with wind orchestras and brass bands around the world and as a solo recitalist. Simone is a found member of BackBeat Percussion Quartet who have won a number of international chamber music competitions and who continue to tour, record and present concerts globally.

Simone appears regularly as a guest performer with such groups as The Equivox Trio and  The Young Voices Band and is an experienced adjudicator and presenter.

In September 2010 she was appointed Director of Percussion at the Royal Northern College of Music and is currently Acting Deputy Head of School of Wind, Brass and Percussion.

The cost of the course is £495 which includes a pass to all concerts during MusicFest. Bursaries are available for all students in full-time education. Information on bursaries and application forms are available here.
