Solem QuartetBeethoven Egmont Overture
Elgar Introduction and Allegro Op 47*
Brahms Double Concerto for violin and cello in A minor Op 102

Beethoven’s Egmont overture, written for Goethe’s play of the same name, is one of his best-known and best-loved orchestral works and makes a splendid introduction to this orchestral concert.  Although not well received at its first performance, Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for String Quartet and String Orchestra soon became a popular favourite; Elgar wrote that its beautiful second theme was inspired by hearing a group of Welsh people singing while walking on the Malvern Hills near his home.  The Sacconi Quartet will be joining the Orion Orchestra for this work, along with musicians from Aberystwyth’s Philomusica Orchestra and students from the Musicfest string courses.

toby-purserwBrahms’ double concerto for violin and cello deserves to be as popular as his concerto for solo violin but is much less frequently heard, due not to any musical inferiority but to simple economics – two soloists cost twice as much as one soloist!  Musicfest audiences are fortunate that the presence at Musicfest of two such fine soloists as Jamie Campbell and Guy Johnston allows the work to be put on without breaking the bank.

Guy Johnston, like Tom Poster, is a longstanding supporter of Musicfest and is one of the most exciting and versatile British cellists of his generation.  Jamie Campbell has also been a regular performer at Musicfest, as well as appearing as a concerto soloist and guest leader with such orchestras as the London Sinfonietta and the City of London Sinfonia.

toby-purser-and-orion-orchestra-wThe Orion Orchestra has built a reputation as one of the most dynamic orchestras on the UK’s music scene. Founded in 2005 by conductor Toby Purser, the orchestra exists to promote the best young musicians in the country, with its performances recognised for their vitality, energy and imaginative programming. It has recently returned from Singapore as guests of the Shaw Foundation and Yong Siew Toh Conservatoire, coinciding with the orchestra’s 10th anniversary.

Toby Purser made his company debut at ENO in November 2014 conducting two performances of The Marriage of Figaro, and has recently been awarded the ENO Mackerras Fellowship 2016-2018. He has conducted many in the finest orchestras both in Britain and on the continent.
