The Johannes Trio featuring
Michael Bochmann (violin), Nicholas Jones (cello) and Iwan Llewelyn Jones (piano)
Beethoven Piano Trio No 3, in C minor, Op 1 No 3
Three of the leading figures in the first Musicfest return to perform one of their favourite pieces to celebrate the 30th anniversary. Michael Bochmann is now a professor of violin and chamber music at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. He continues to be active internationally as a soloist, as a member of chamber ensembles, and as a conductor. Nicholas Jones has been Head of Strings at Chetham’s School of Music since 1997. He is also a cello tutor at the Royal Northern College of Music. He combines this commitment to teaching with an international career as a concert and chamber music cellist. Iwan Llewelyn Jones has established an international reputation as a concert pianist particularly for his interpretations of French and Welsh piano music. He has recently taken on the role of Director of the Welsh International Piano Festival.
Beethoven’s first published works, the set of three Piano Trios Opus 1, proved to be a surprising success with the public if not with the professional critics. The trios proclaimed a new voice in music that was clearly going beyond the works of Haydn and Mozart. This was particularly true of the third of the trios, especially its first and last movements, which give us a taste of the turbulent world that the composer would create in such later works as the Pathétique and Appassionata sonatas or the fifth symphony.
