Saxophone recital with Kyle Horch  (saxophone) Anya Fadina (piano)

Robert Planel  Prelude et Saltarelle
Liz Johnson  Inflorescence
David Amram  Greenwich Village Portraits

Kyle Horch has been one of Britain’s outstanding musicians and instrumental teachers for nearly thirty years, since coming to Britain from the United States to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.  He made his London debut at the Purcell Room in 1989, and since then has performed with most of Britain’s major orchestras, as well as playing as a soloist and chamber musician in many venues in Britain and abroad.

Kyle Horch and Anya Fadina will present a programme of three works, all originally written for saxophone and piano. Robert Planel (1908-1994) was a French composer; his Prelude et Saltarelle, written in 1957, is a delightful concours piece in the tradition of French chamber music for wind. Liz Johnson (b.1964) is a contemporary English composer, who lives in the Malvern Hills and teaches composition at Birmingham Conservatoire. Inflorescence – composed in 2011 for Kyle Horch and receiving its Welsh premiere at this performance – is a musical response to Aberystwyth-born poet David Hart’s long poem The Crag Inspector, which explores the landscape of Bardsey Island, just off the coast of north Wales. American composer David Amram (b. 1930) is a contemporary of Leonard Bernstein, who chose him to be the first-ever composer-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic in the 1960s. Equally at home in both classical and jazz idioms, he has also written film scores including The Manchurian Candidate. His evocative Greenwich Village Portraits is a substantial recent work: composed in 2014 and based on memories of three of his close friends – Arthur Miller, Odetta Holmes, and Frank McCourt, the work is both elegiac and life-affirming, with influences of jazz, klezmer, and Irish folk music.

Bydd Kyle Horch ac Anya Fadina yn cyflwyno rhaglen o dri darn, pob un wedi’i ysgrifennu’n wreiddiol ar gyfer sacsoffon a phiano.  ‘Roedd Robert Planel (1908-1994) yn gyfansoddwr Ffrengig; mae ei Prelude et Saltarelle, a ysgrifennwyd ym 1957, yn ddarn hyfryd yn nhraddodiad cerddoriaeth siambr Ffrengig ar gyfer offerynnau chwyth. Cyfansoddwraig gyfoes Brydeinig yw Liz Johnson (g.1964) sy’n byw ym Mryniau Malvern ac yn dysgu cyfansoddiad yn Conservatoire Birmingham .  Mae Inflorescence – a gyfansoddwyd yn 2011 ar gyfer Kyle Horch ac a gyflwynir am y tro cyntaf yng Nghymru yn y perfformiad hwn – yn ymateb cerddorol i gerdd hir gan fardd a anwyd yn Aberystwyth, David Hart, The Crag Inspector, sy’n ystyried tirwedd Ynys Enlli, oddi ar arfordir gogledd Cymru. Mae’r cyfansoddwr Americanaidd David Amram (g. 1930) yn gyfoeswr i Leonard Bernstein, a’i ddewisodd i fod y cyfansoddwr preswyl cyntaf erioed gyda cherddorfa Philharmonig Efrog Newydd yn y 1960au. Yr un mor gartrefol mewn idiomau clasurol a jas, mae ef hefyd wedi ysgrifennu sgorau ffilm gan gynnwys The Manchurian Candidate. Mae ei Greenwich Village Portraits teimladwy yn ddarn diweddar sylweddol: fe’i cyfansoddwyd yn 2014 ac mae’n seiliedig ar atgofion tri o’i gyfeillion agos – Arthur Miller, Odetta Holmes, a Frank McCourt. Mae’r gwaith yn  drist ac eto’n galonogol, gyda dylanwadau jas, klezmer, a cherddoriaeth werin Wyddelig.
