Simon LaneSchubert Fantasia in F minor, for piano four hands, D940
Tchaikovsky Piano Trio No 1 in A minor, Op 50

Written just a few months before his death, Schubert’s F minor Fantasia D940 is one of the greatest pieces written for piano four hands.  Consisting of four distinct sections, it is a sonata in all but name and, although there is great variety in the work, most listeners sense in it an elegiac quality as if Schubert realised he did not have long to live.

Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio was written in memory of Nikolai Rubenstein, Director of the Moscow Conservatoire and brother of the pianist and composer Anton Rubenstein, who died in 1881.  Despite their disagreements – he had been scathing about Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto – Rubenstein was a close friend and a firm supporter of Tchaikovsky and Tchaikovsky dedicated the work ‘To the memory of a great artist’.  The first movement of the work combines both the elegiac and the heroic, while the second is a substantial set of variations on a theme that is said to have been inspired by folk music that Tchaikovsky and Rubenstein had heard together on a day out in the country.  The whole work combines the tunefulness and the passion so characteristic of the composer’s music.

Tom Poster needs no introduction to Musicfest audiences. His longstanding support for Musicfest is greatly appreciated: as well as performing in Musicfest every year, he regularly gives fund-raising concerts for the Friends of Musicfest. Outside of Aberystwyth, he is internationally recognised as a pianist of outstanding artistry and versatility and has given solo recitals, concerto performances and chamber music concerts across Europe and North America.

Jamie CampbellGuy Johnston, like Tom Poster, is a longstanding supporter of Musicfest and is one of the most exciting and versatile British cellists of his generation.  Jamie Campbell has also been a regular performer at Musicfest, as well as appearing as a concerto soloist and guest leader with such orchestras as the London Sinfonietta and the City of London Sinfonia.
