Solem Quartet

Sibelius String Quartet No 1, in E flat, JS184
Delius String Quartet

A wonderful opportunity to hear two rarities. Sibelius’ early Quartet in E flat was written in 1885, when the composer was 20 and still very much under the influence of the German romantics. In contrast, Delius’ quartet was written in 1916, when the composer was 55 and is fully representative of his mature style.

The Solem Quartet is returning to Aberystwyth as Musicfest resident ensemble for the fourth year running.  The quartet came together when studying at the University of Manchester and takes its name from the University’s motto Arduus ad solem (‘Striving for the sun’). During 2017 the quartet have started on a five year venture to perform the complete cycle of Beethoven string quartets, commissioned by a MusicFest supporter.
