Following the successful concert featuring Tom Poster and Elena Urioste, Friends of MusicFest is offering another opportunity to hear internationally renowned musicians for FREE.
In the second concert celebrated pianist Tom Poster will be joined by Guy Johnston, one of the most exciting and versatile British cellists of his generation. His early successes include BBC Young Musician of the Year and receiving a Classical Brit Award at the Royal Albert Hall. Among past highlights with leading orchestras in UK are ‘Don Quixote’ with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain/Tortelier, the Walton Cello Concerto with the BBC Philharmonic/Tortelier, the Dvorak Cello Concerto.
The concert will take place in the Great Hall in Aberystwyth Arts Centre on 3rd April at 7.30PM.
The programme will include Rachmaninov’s Prelude, Op. 2 No. 1; Beethoven ‘s Seven Variations on ‘Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen’ from Mozart’s Magic Flute ; Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, Op. 70 and Martinu’s Variations on a Theme of Rossini. Following the interval the following works will be performed Mendelssohn’s Variations Concertantes, Op. 17; Sibelius’ Two Pieces, Op. 77; Lutoslawski’s Grave (Metamorphoses) and Chopin’s Introduction and Polonaise Brillante, Op. 3.
The musicians are generously donating their time free of charge as part of the efforts of Friends of MusicFest raising funds for student bursaries to support young musicians to attend courses at MusicFest. Several local musicians including Sophia Nicholas and Joshua Ireland have benefitted from these bursaries allowing them the chance to participate in the life-changing experience of attending the International Summer School which runs from 22nd to 30th July and which will be celebrating it’s 30th anniversary this year.
Carol Nixon from Friends of MusicFest said, “The players are all donating their time and talent for the sake of the Aberystwyth musical scene, which they love so much, and we are extremely grateful to them. Tom has already taken part in one free concert this year (with Elena Urioste violin), which was exceptionally well received, so he really is pulling out all the stops this year. For many in Aberystwyth Tom Poster and Guy Johnston’s appearances at MusicFest are the highlight of their musical year – the fact we have these additional opportunities to hear playing of this calibre is wonderful for audiences in Aberystwyth. “
